There's a YouTube video out now about what probably happened to "The Reality War", and it confirms a lot of what I conjectured in my previous post, though note that all of this is still fan speculation based on facts and clues gleaned from many different sources.

Put on Nazi Agent as background noise while doing some research (even if it breaks me every time), and wondered:

  • Do we even know how Otto got that scar? Hmmm... plot bunnies...

  • That ending speech... Oh, that American hypocrisy, right?

  • Speaking of the ending, I keep thinking about how Otto will be sent to a concentration camp, and probably executed. Which is why it breaks my heart so much. Once again, Connie plays a character who sacrifices everything for what he thinks is right.

Music, background noise, complete quiet. Something else? What works for you?

I thought AMSR keyboard typing sounds would work for me. They didn't. (When listening to it, I can feel my hair trying to crawl up my scalp.)

But something like this does:

My brain reward cycle is fucked, and the longer I think about it, the more I recognize that it's always been this way.

Case in point: I performed recently after preparing for 5 months.

My mother said, "It went well! That must feel good."

Me: "..."

It didn't. It never really does, not unless someone else gives me external validation.

Whenever I do something hard, my brain's response is, "Well, I did it, so how hard could it have been?"

This applies to excelling academically (which I have done frequently), excelling at my job (which I have done on occasion), every type of performance I've ever undertaken (and there have been a lot), every form of art/craft I've ever done (writing, knitting, crocheting, etc.), and helping friends.

Mostly I just feel relief that it's over, and my brain isn't going to give me the constant round of "You should work on [thing]!" anymore. Nah, the shoulds will switch to something else, but at least it'll be new at first.

Phone updated. Thought it was a security and performance patch, not a whole visual overhaul of the operating system. It makes it look like an iPhone now. Not my jam. The icons are so busy with so many colours.

And AI. They put an AI on my phone. Disabled it, have no need for it.

Had some dark chocolate with chilli flakes. It's good!

The Friday Five

1. Have you ever been to summer camp?

No. Not the traditional idea of a summer camp. However, my family would spend the whole summer at our camp on the lake.

2. Have you ever made a s'more?

Yes, and still do. Not quite the same made in the microwave though.

3. Have you ever slept under the stars (no tent/tarp)?

Yes, as a kid. My cousin and I decided it would be a great idea. We made homemade hammocks-the kind only a kid could love- under the apple trees. In the morning, I woke up face-to-face with a cow. Goodness, I haven't thought about that in years.

4. Have you ever had a member of the opposite sex sleep over at your house?

Yes. My husband was the opposite sex. (that sounds so weird to type it out like that)

5. What type of bed do you have (queen, twin, bunk, etc.)?

Queen with a brand new mattress. I just replaced the old one a week ago.

The Internet Archive was down for about 7 hours yesterday, due to a power outage in San Francisco. Of course, there are conspiracy theories smh. They should invest in some backup servers elsewhere.

[personal profile] sovay recced Gwynne Garfinkle's The Last Word, a poem about the 1935 film Mad Love.

Laridian on Pillowfort posted an assortment of couple photos from the first half of the 20th century (het warning, lol). They make for great pose references.

Ethel Vance's Escape, which I heard is worse then the film. Boy.

Helen McInnes's Above Suspicion, and it appears good ol' Hassie is a movie-only character :(

J. Storer Clouston's The Spy in Black, which does not have the Pressburger touch, but I quite liked the first chapter. Simple, but it paints the picture nicely.

I deeply enjoyed reading a Star Trek: The Original Series story in which Hanahaki is nonfatal and limited to Vulcans. I enjoyed it all the more because I didn't read the tags beyond noting that it's General Audiences and No Warnings Apply. Having now read the tags and finished the story, which ends hopefully, I recommend that you give the story a try if the idea of Spock coughing up flowers of unrequited love appeals to you -- but page down and skip the tags, unless there are common pairings in the fandom that you need to avoid.

Padmé, much like Dolly Parton, loses an Amidala look-alike contest. How many of the entrants are in drag? I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

There are definitely drag king portrayals of Anakin and Obi-Wan in their heyday, possibly including makeouts with each other and/or drag king clones.

Anyone who has seen The Empire Strips Back knows what drag!Luke Skywalker is wearing, and as for Leia -- well, I could insert any number of pictures of people doing Leia drag, in any number of costumes, and she’s not even royalty in this galaxy. Who even knows how many hotass drag kings lust after Han’s gender, too.

The royal sactuary is arguably the most important chamber in the palace. It is here that, in former times, a sanctuarian priest held daily rituals designed to uplift the spirits of worshippers and – I am sorry to say – crush the spirits of slaves. The Emorians, rightly appalled by the Koretians' treatment of their slaves, built part of their new palace over the burning ground just outside the courtyard, which lay within easy sight of the sanctuary.

Despite its despicable misdeeds of the past, Koretia's priesthood has survived to the present day. The Jackal, who is also High Priest of Koretia, holds annual services to honor the slaves who served and died in Koretia; these services are often attended by the few slaves who survived their treatment. Some of these slaves remain dead in mind but come willingly to this service, drawn here by the Jackal, who is the god of death and who therefore watches over their spirits in the Land Beyond. To witness these dead-in-mind men and women gather around the Jackal is a deeply moving experience - a living monument to the Koretian belief that the gods can transform evil into good.

The royal sanctuary was desecrated at the time of the Emorian invasion of 961; the sanctuary was used to stable horses in the years that followed. After the Emorians withdrew from Koretia in 976, the chamber remained empty for many years. In 987, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the liberation of Koretia's slaves by the Emorians, the chamber was rededicated under the name of the Royal Sanctuary of the Living Dead. It is now a memorial to the suffering of Koretia's former slaves.

Conveniently for visitors, the royal sanctuary can be visited separately from the rest of the palace. The sanctuary now has its own entrance, unconnected to the royal residence or any other portion of the Koretian palace.

[Translator's note: The Royal Sanctuary plays a dramatic role in Death Mask.]

[community profile] justmarried exchange is currently in the nomination phase, and I have been having trouble because they allow you to sign up with ten fandoms but you only can nominate seven. And my favorite marriage trope is the sedoretu, which is a specific type of poly marriage invented by Ursula K. LeGuin, and requires four people. Which means that I need to have foursomes nominated! (Although I can just go with a pairing and say "I love sedoretus, if you want to write this pairing as a sedoretu you can choose who to have be the other pair in the sedoretu.")

Anyway, the reason I have not nominated is that I am waiting to see what else got nominated to help me whittle down what I want to nominate, and I just checked the nominations and I think that [personal profile] tielan has nominated! (Thank you!) Because the BSG foursome I was going to nominate (Lee/Kara/Sam/Dee) has been nominated, and so has the Steve/Maria/Bucky/Natasha foursome in MCU fandom, and both are foursomes I have written as sedoretus for [personal profile] tielan before. Which means that not only is there someone interested in the same characters, there's someone who's probably going to sign up who is interested in sedoretus, specifically. That is really exciting to me! And it does free up some nomination slots.

Here are some nominations I am planning:

TGE: Maia/Csethiro/Csevet/Vedero (there are a bunch of TGE ships already nominated but they are all suuuuuuuper rare)

DS9: Sisko ships, Worf/Jadzia, Miles/Keiko/Kira/Bashir

TOS: Spock/Uhura and some foursomes (although someone on the Yuletide discord may be nominating sedoretus in this fandom, which would mean I don't have to nominate them and could free up a slot)

B5: John/Delenn, John/Delenn/Lennier, Delenn/Neroon, John/Delenn/Lennier/? (I don't know who I'd put with those three to complete the sedoretu--Anna, maybe? a Minbari OC?)

Peter Wimsey, sedoretu with Parker and Mary? Or Bunter? (Although I can't think of who would be the fourth in a sedoretu with Bunter, so I may just leave that as a poly threesome.

Rivers of London--I think just Peter/Beverly here, because I can't think of any sedoretus and ever since we learned that Nightingale was ace (in the novella Masquerades of Spring) that has completely killed any desire to ship him, for me. RoL is the only one on the list that's iffy, because much as I love it I'm not sure how much I'm into RoL + marriage tropes.

That's six, and with BSG taken care of I can look at some of my other fandoms for the seventh slot. Here are some options:

SW Legends, Han/Leia/Luke/Mara, Han/Leia/Lando, Lando/Luke/Mara. Han/Leia/Lando most properly belongs in SW OT, but that would mean using a second Star Wars nomination slot.

TNG: nobody's nominated this yet, and I can't think of any sedoretus, but I would probably do something like Picard/Guinan (my TNG rare pair OTP), Picard/Ro, Riker/Ro, Troi/Worf, and Data/Geordi

Random Harvest. Look, this movie is just so tropey and melodramatic it would be amazing to pile even more tropes into it.
